Diesel Diagnostics in Boise, ID

We go beyond the code to find the actual cause

A check engine light, a DPF warning, a power loss code, or a mysterious driveability concern. Diesel systems are complex and generic scan tools often can't access the full picture. We use diesel-specific diagnostic platforms with live data capability to test what's actually happening, not just report which code fired.

Every diesel diagnostic at Sager and Sons starts with a full fault code pull across all modules, followed by live data analysis to verify what's actually failing. You'll know exactly what we found and why before any parts get ordered.

A code is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

We verify every fault with live data and component testing so we fix the actual cause and not just the symptom that happened to trigger the light.

Our Diagnostic Process

Systematic. Documented. No guesswork.

Step 1
💻

Full Module Scan

We pull fault codes from all modules: ECM, TCM, BCM, and any diesel-specific modules, not just the powertrain codes most scanners show.

Step 2
📊

Live Data Analysis

We monitor real-time sensor data at idle and under load. Fuel trim, boost pressure, EGT, injector pulse width, and more.

Step 3
🔬

Component Testing

When live data points to a specific component, we test it directly. Injector balance rates, glow plug resistance, boost leak testing, fuel pressure verification.

Step 4
📱

Clear Report

You get a clear explanation with photos of what we found, what it means, and what we recommend before any repair work starts.

What We Diagnose

Every major diesel system on your truck

Diesel fuel system diagnostics Boise

Fuel System

Injector balance rates, fuel pressure, lift pump function, and fuel trim analysis. Hard starts, misfires, and power loss often trace back here.

Turbo and boost diagnostics Boise

Turbo & Boost System

Boost leak testing, turbo response, wastegate and VGT function, charge pipe inspection, and intercooler efficiency.

DPF EGR DEF diagnostics Boise

DPF / EGR / DEF Systems

DPF soot load and regen status, EGR valve and cooler function, DEF quality and dosing system, and all associated emissions codes.

Diesel electrical sensor diagnostics Boise

Electrical & Sensors

Glow plug system, MAP and MAF sensors, temperature sensors, O2 and NOx sensors, and any module communication faults.

Diesel engine drivetrain diagnostics Boise

Engine & Drivetrain

Compression testing where appropriate, transmission shift quality, and any drivetrain codes from TCM or transfer case modules.

Diesel cooling system diagnostics Boise

Cooling System

EGR cooler condition, coolant temp sensor accuracy, thermostat function, and early signs of internal coolant leaks that show up in data before they're visible.

Diesel Diagnostics FAQs

Straight answers about diesel diagnosis

Why can't I just clear the codes and see what comes back?
Clearing codes without fixing the cause just resets the monitor. The fault will return, often after enough drive cycles to confirm it's real. Worse, some faults only store once and clearing loses the diagnostic history, making the problem harder to trace later.
Can I drive my diesel if it's in limp mode?
Limp mode limits power to protect your engine. You can usually get home or to the shop, but continued driving in limp mode can cause additional problems. Get it in as soon as you can.
My DPF light is on. Does the filter need to be replaced?
Not necessarily. A DPF light often means the filter is full and needs to regen, or that a regen cycle couldn't complete. It can also indicate a sensor fault or a problem upstream causing excessive soot. We diagnose the cause before recommending cleaning, forced regen, or replacement.
How long does a diesel diagnostic take?
A basic scan and initial assessment is typically 30 to 60 minutes. More complex issues involving live data analysis or intermittent faults can take longer. We'll give you an honest timeline upfront.
Does the diagnostic fee apply toward the repair?
Yes. If you proceed with the recommended repair at our shop, the diagnostic fee is applied toward the total. Ask us about this when you drop off.
Do you need the truck to be showing symptoms when I bring it in?
Stored codes stay in memory even after the light turns off. Intermittent issues are harder to catch, but freeze frame data and live data monitoring often tell the story even when symptoms aren't present at the time of the visit.
